Paint correction is an auto detailing procedure that removes hazing, minor scratches, marring, swirl marks, and other blemishes on the vehicle’s clear coat. It does this by using specialized machines and polishing compounds to slowly remove microscopic layers of clear coat until the surface is smooth again.
Machine polishing is intended to remove imperfections on the vehicle’s painted surface. It’s a service that is completed typically to either prep a vehicle for a protective coating or to simply help bring out the best depth and shine a vehicle can offer.
The process is always customized based on the type of paint, surface imperfections, and the request of the customer.

Stage 1 Paint Correction is a single step polish using a cutting compound and a pad, either with the use of a rotary polisher or dual action polisher. The single stage paint correction is intended to remove small marring and swirl marks.
When the vehicle's paint has moderate or medium swirl marks and scratches that are embedded in the clear coat, stage 2 is the next progression. At this point, you’re going to use (2) different polishes and pad combinations. Typically – it starts by using a more abrasive polish first, then stepping down to a finer polish to remove light scratches, marring, or swirls left by the first step.
This is a three-step correction, where the vehicle’s paint has heavy swirl marks, marring, or other defects. The first step involves using a heavy cutting compound, with a rotary polisher to really cut into the clear coat. The second step, a finer polish decreases the grit and flattens the paint, removing finer blemishes and finally, a light polishing should smooth out the damage almost completely.
Paint correction is the process of correcting or removing imperfections in a vehicle’s paint surface. These could range from minor scratches to water spots, buffer holograms, paint overspray, bird dropping surface stains and wipe-down marks, oxidation, and other damage visible on your car’s clear coat.

One of the premier detailers in the world spent 8-10 a panel on correcting paint! There’s no definitive answer. It’s all in how good you want your vehicle to look coupled with the capabilities of the detailer.
No. It’s not necessary. BUT, it sure will help and justify the investment of a coating. Blemishes and imperfections will show more after a ceramic coating is installed, so better to get rid of them prior to the coating.
Commonly, there are 3 stages to a paint correction: cutting with heavy compound, polishing with a one step product or medium cut polish and finish polishing. However, if perfection is the goal, you can add more stages, such as fine polishing, before cleaning the surface of residue and applying protection.
